Green Gantry

Solution idea, plausibility or your concrete product:
A "gantry" is a frame construction above a motorway or road on which various devices for traffic and toll data collection are mounted. Currently, these gantries are mostly made of steel.
The "Green Gantry" made of wood is a new and innovative concept for a sustainable roadside infrastructure that can greatly contribute to achieving the EU Green Deal objective.
Wood as an alternative to steel meets the same stability requirements of European standards and norms (Eurocode).
Wood shows resistance to environmental influences including road salt without chemical treatment.
Wood is durable and biodegradable and support circular economy. With a design that respects the properties of wood as a building material and the structural wood protection, the gantry has a lifespan of 30 years.
Due to a modular design concept for walkable and non-walkable versions, different widths of up to 35-meter span can be delivered.
With only one Green Gantry made of wood and designed by Kapsch TrafficCom, CO2 savings of up to 53 tons of CO2 are possible compared to the gantry made of steel, with the same span of 35-meter.
With a span of 18 meters, CO2 savings of up to 11 tons are possible compared to the variant made of steel.

Possible uses:
The Green Gantry can be used as road infrastructure for toll and enforcement bridges on motorways and federal roads. In addition, this concept can be used for telematics overhead bridges or for traffic sign bridges.

Reference examples:
Timber is coming to the fore due to legal requirements such as the EU Green Deal.
Reference examples exist in the transport sector for pedestrian bridges, wildlife bridges and wooden bridges fit for vehicle traffic.
Innovative timber applications in building construction include high-rise buildings (HoHo in Vienna), observation towers (Pyramidenkogel in Carinthia), public infrastructure (CANARY WHARF in London) and sports and storage halls.
All these examples meet the high safety standards and a long lifespan while exposed to weather conditions such as rain, ice, snow, etc.

Competences / implementation experience:
Together with cooperation partners from the fields of research and development, planning and engineering offices as well as timber construction companies, Kapsch TrafficCom has designed the wood-based gantry that complies with the norms and the specific requirements for toll equipment.
Kapsch TrafficCom is a globally recognized provider of traffic solutions for sustainable mobility. Innovative solutions in the application areas of tolling, toll services, traffic and demand management contribute to a healthier world without congestion. The company has successfully implemented projects in more than 50 countries around the globe. With one-stop solutions, the company covers the entire customer value chain, from components and design to the implementation and operation of systems.

Mehrwert

The Green Gantry as an innovative infrastructure roadside solution made of wood is an active contribution to the EU Green Deal.
It can significantly reduce the CO2 footprint, it´s produced of the sustainable raw material wood and it fulfils the requirements for Eurocode, statics and safety.
The currently used roadside infrastructure solutions made of steel or aluminum release in the material extraction and production considerable amounts of CO2. The wood, on contrary, stores CO2 and delivers positive carbon footprint that helps to achieve the climate targets.
The Green Gantry is made from a domestic wood species and withstands Austrian weather conditions through constructive wood protection, completely without chemical treatment.
The chosen design allows a lifespan of 30 years.
The modular concept of the Green Gantry allows the production of different gantry types and dimensions at favorable prices and within short delivery times.
Transport, installation and maintenance is comparable with the currently used steel version.
Both, steel and timber prices are subject to market fluctuations. However, the current tense situation on the steel market (as of November 2021) as well as the EU Sustainable Finance Taxonomy (coming into force in February 2022) favors wood as a building material.
Overall, the Green Gantry offers an economically competitive solution that pioneers the way to sustainable roadside infrastructure for greener and cleaner traffic environment in Europe.
