Emission free propulsion through hydrogen fuel cell solutions
The transition to climate-friendly and ultimately emission free shipping is posing both significant challenges as well as opportunities for the whole international marine sector, from owners and operators to novel technology providers. Nedstack fuel cell technology believes in working together with the sector, to provide silent, emission free and low maintenance power solutions in places where just batteries are not sufficient any more.
Our Proton Exchange Membrance Fuel Cell (PEMFC) technology is based on 20+ years of experience in research, design and production of fuel cell stacks and fuel cell systems. We have built the first and longest running, the first 1MW and largest PEM FC power plant in the world, as well as the fuel cell systems to the second fuel cell ship (Amsterdam) ever. We are now working on various applications, including fuel cell systems for inland navigation and sea-going vessels, multiple high power stationary applications and mobile power solutions. All of these solutions are either being build or already delivered to clients.
In a PEM fuel cell, hydrogen reacts with oxygen from air, resulting in direct electric power, heat and pure water. The electric current can be converted towards the specific need, both AC and DC. Our solutions are based on low pressure (<300mbarg) process operation and industrial components. As a result, our solutions are designed to last for 10-15 years. The fuel cell stack performance degrades over time (~24.000 operational hours), but they can easily be replaced, after which the stacks can be refurbished. This will provide you with durable and highly circular power solution.
At Nedstack, we provide services from powder to power. We develop and produce our own fuel cell stacks, design fuel cell systems to suit certain applications and with co-makers provide turn-key solutions, that can be followed by various maintenance strategies. As a result, we have developed a portfolio of fuel cell solutions for various applications and at different power outputs, ranging from 7kW up to 2MW. We also provide services to and support our clients to design their owns systems, or tailor our standards to their needs. Owning the IP and the engineering of our solutions and our willingness to cooperate with integrators also allows for strong localization of integration, supporting local supply chains and securing local support.
All our maritime projects are in compliance and cooperation with class authorities and for instance ES-TRIN. We have also been closely involved with the design of fuel cell regulations within ES-TRIN and our working on our first project approvals, concerning high power inland cargo vessels.

Emission free, proven technology and developed, designed and built in Europe. Our fuel cell solutions will provide long range, high power and low maintenance power, reducing on board noise levels with an extensive lifetime. The fuel cell systems can be integrated in various power distribution configurations and we would be happy to assist the shipyards and its system integrators with successful integration.
