Mabel AI derives its name from “Medical bABEL” – which is also the problem that we are trying to solve, i.e., language barriers in healthcare. It was founded in 2022 by Dr. Karolina Sjöberg Jabbar, MD, PhD, a specialist physician with research experience from Harvard/MIT, and Dr. rer. nat. Shahid Jabbar, a doctorate in AI from Germany with extensive experience in technical leadership in large corporations such as Boeing and establishing successful startups in Sweden and Boston, US.
## Need for a secure translation system
Voice data is among the most sensitive data available. It is often characterized as bio-metric data, i.e., it can be used to precisely identify the speaker. Using modern "voice cloning," it is now possible to recreate a person's voice with just three seconds of recording. This places high demands on security and integrity of voice data.
Mabel AI is an innovative company based in Gothenburg, Sweden that develops private and secure AI-based voice-to-voice translation platform specifically designed for the public sector, with a primary focus on healthcare. Our vision is to eradicate language barriers as a cause of death and disability by 2030!
We distinguish ourselves from competitors by exclusively using our own AI models, without relying on third-party solutions such as the ones offered by the big-tech services. This implies that we can:
1. guarantee all aspects of data privacy,
2. easily incorporate new vocabulary, and
3. run the whole system on premise, within the firewall of our customers with no data leaving the premise,
Moreover, our translation software can be run completely on-device.

## Offline mode
Mabel Translate can be run completely on-device without the need to be connected to WiFi. This is a vital feature when it comes to usability in a hospital environment where due to the radiation shielding, WiFi and LTE dead zones are very common.
This is made possible by using our own model compression technology that has resulted in smaller models that can be run purely on CPU. Our machine translation models give a latency of only 400 ms on a server-grade CPU.
## Remote interpretation
Mabel Translate is more than just an app; it is a complete communication platform that also serves the full communication stack. Apart from the in-person consultations, Mabel also offers a secure video platform for remote patient meetings, where both parties can communicate in their own language. The video platform and the respective AI models can be fully run on-premise for the highest form of security.
## Ability to connect an external interpretation agency
In Sweden, we currently sell through Sweden's largest public interpretation agency, Tolkförmedling Väst. In that version, we have a direct button to the booking platform to book an interpreter if the conversation becomes too intense to be handled by AI.
